Researchers separate electron and lattice heat effects in twisted graphene

Scientists at the National University of Singapore used terahertz radiation to isolate electronic collisions from lattice vibrations in twisted bilayer graphene on August 13, 2026.

New method isolates heat sources

A conventional test warms both the electrons and the atomic lattice simultaneously. The team applied terahertz radiation to raise electron temperature while keeping the surrounding lattice nearly unchanged. This approach allowed them to distinguish between scattering by phonons and collisions between electrons themselves.

Resistance rises sharply at magic angle

Devices twisted close to the magic angle showed a significant increase in electrical resistance. The material's resistance climbed by several kilohms during the experiment. This finding indicates a strong electronic contribution even in regimes often linked to phonon interactions.
