Researchers clarify spruce evolutionary history using new genetic data
Scientists from Lanzhou University and the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden published findings on spruce diversification in Cladistics on Oct. 24.

Study resolves conflicting genetic signals
The team analyzed transcriptomic data from 37 spruce species to understand their evolutionary relationships. They found that incomplete lineage sorting caused most of the confusion in previous genetic studies rather than hybridization events.
New framework handles complex genomes
Researchers used a pan-transcriptomic approach to overcome technical issues caused by massive repetitive sequences in conifer DNA. This method allowed them to process 118 datasets, including 43 that were newly generated for the project.
Gene variability across spruce species
Analysis showed that most genes within the genus are highly variable while only a small fraction remain stable. The study provides a quantitative way to resolve complex conflicts in conifer evolutionary history.
