Climate overshoot causes lasting damage even after temperatures return to target
New Concordia-led research published in Communications Earth & Environment finds that temporarily exceeding warming targets leaves permanent changes in the climate system.

Study compares paired climate scenarios
Scientists analyzed 42 pairs of scenarios using a model from the University of Victoria. One scenario in each pair briefly exceeded a warming threshold before returning to it, while the other stayed below that limit throughout. The researchers measured how long temperatures remained above a target using a metric called degree-years.
Permafrost and oceans show little recovery
Results indicate that permafrost retains lost carbon even after global temperatures fall back to baseline levels. Changes in sea level, ocean warmth, and oxygen content also persist long after the overshoot ends. Some climate variables proved much more susceptible to these temporary spikes than others.
