Two giant pandas depart China for a decade at Zoo Atlanta
China sent two giant pandas named Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to the United States on Sunday following an agreement made during President Xi Jinping's Washington visit.
Departure details and flight path
The pair left Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport on a chartered Boeing 777 operated by FedEx at around 3:00 am. State media reported that the aircraft was tracked as it flew toward Alaska before continuing to its final destination.
Preparation for the journey
Caretakers prepared steamed corn buns, bamboo shoots, and carrots to keep the animals nourished during their 15-hour flight. Experienced keepers from the US side accompanied the duo on the trip to ensure their safety.
Arrival plans at Zoo Atlanta
Zoo Atlanta has renovated its facilities and assembled a team of animal caretakers in preparation for the pandas' arrival. The animals will spend the next 10 years at the Georgia zoo under a loan agreement.
