Casualties and targeted vessels rise sharply
A Turkish official noted that approximately 72 ships faced targeting from January through the first week of September. Of those incidents, fifty involved vessels connected to Turkey through ownership or crew nationality. Three Turkish citizens died and eighteen others were injured during these attacks on the waterway.
Kyiv considers maritime truce proposals
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy indicated at a recent summit that Kyiv is prepared for a maritime truce in the region. He referenced suggestions from Egypt, India and Turkey as potential foundations for such an agreement. Regional diplomats suggest Moscow currently holds irrelevant demands that delay any immediate breakthrough.
