Turkey offers help for Saudi military needs under new pact
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday that Turkey will examine Saudi Arabia's potential military requirements following attacks by Yemen's Houthis.
Trilateral defence agreement details
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a joint defence pact in August in Mecca. The agreement states that an attack on one member counts as an attack on all three nations. Turkish officials say they are ready to assist with technical issues related to Saudi security.
Context of regional conflict
Houthis control large parts of Yemen and have launched strikes against Saudi cities since July. These attacks target energy infrastructure and shipping lanes, threatening global oil supplies and Red Sea routes. President Donald Trump has declined requests for military support to fight the group.
Proposals to end fighting
Fidan stated that proposals to stop the conflict have been shared with all sides involved. He emphasized it is unacceptable for Saudi Arabia to become part of a wider war between the US and Iran. The Turkish minister noted Riyadh has no desire to join such a conflict.
