Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday to declare that the Golan Heights will stay under Syrian sovereignty.
President rejects Israeli annexation claims
Ahmed al-Sharaa stated at the meeting that any efforts to violate Syria's sovereignty break international law. He insisted that attempts to change the status of the region will be stopped according to Security Council Resolution 497.

The leader noted that a December 2025 vote saw 123 nations back a resolution regarding the occupied Syrian Golan. He also reminded the assembly that all previous annexation measures are considered null and void under existing United Nations rules.

Sharaa accused Israel of conducting nearly 500 air and artillery strikes against Syrian positions. He added that Israeli forces have carried out more than 1,200 incursions and detained around 300 Syrians.
