Leaders warn of unchecked power risks

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that AI must be built for people rather than simply to speed up machines. He argued that decisions regarding the technology cannot be made by labs in San Francisco alone. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei added that misuse of models could allow bad actors to create biological weapons.

Commitment to slow development pace

Amodei pledged to slow down development where necessary to ensure the safety of new releases. Altman called for extreme care as autonomous systems move faster than human institutions can oversee them. Both executives emphasized that the industry must not accept excessive technological risk just because benefits are important.

Call for global democratic oversight

The leaders insisted that governments accountable to their people must shape the future of artificial intelligence. They warned against allowing a few hands to concentrate too much power within the technology sector. The meeting took place during an emergency session of the 15-member council in New York.
