Missile launch details and range

Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea early on Saturday. The projectile flew more than 700 kilometres before landing in waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. North Korean officials described the weapon as an intermediate-range strategic missile capable of changing its flight orbit at low altitude.

Artificial intelligence claims and oversight

Kim Yo Jong said her brother Kim Jong Un supervised the test of the missile. She stated that artificial intelligence was introduced into the system to make interception highly difficult. South Korea's military did not immediately comment on these specific claims regarding the missile's capabilities.

Context of recent border incidents

The launch occurred days after Seoul demanded an apology for a blast in the Demilitarised Zone that wounded three soldiers. Pyongyang denied responsibility for last month's explosion and called South Korea despicable on Friday. These remarks undercut civilian leadership efforts to return to dialogue between the two nations.
