Israeli forces close Palestinian shops and storm Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem
Israeli authorities ordered dozens of Palestinian shops to close and allowed hundreds of Israelis to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem on Sunday for Sukkot prayers.
Shop closures restrict access
Israeli forces ordered more than 50 Palestinian businesses in the Old City to shut their doors on Sunday morning. The closures affected shops located along streets leading to Bab al-Qattanin, a main gate used by worshippers. Authorities stated these measures would remain in place until October 2 to facilitate holiday rituals.
Incursion into mosque site
Hundreds of Israeli nationals entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Sunday night under police protection. Videos from the scene showed individuals performing Talmudic rituals and singing within the eastern part of the site. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir was among those present during the event.
Palestinian officials respond
The Islamic Waqf Department in Jerusalem reported that the entry involved scores of people performing prayers. Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh described the actions as a dangerous provocation to Muslim feelings worldwide. He warned that such incidents risk igniting a religious war in the region.
