Israel presents first ambassador credentials to Somaliland president in Hargeisa
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi accepted the country's first ambassador, Michael Lotem, at a ceremony in Hargeisa last week.

Ceremony marks mutual recognition
The event formalised a relationship that began with mutual recognition on 26 December 2025. Officials also laid the cornerstone for an Israeli embassy during the proceedings. Israel remains the only state to have recognised Somaliland since its declaration of independence in 1991.
Regional powers oppose move
Somalia, the African Union and Arab states strongly oppose the diplomatic shift. China has been particularly vocal about viewing recognition as separatism that threatens its naval presence in Djibouti. Beijing emphasises the importance of freedom of navigation near Somaliland's main port.
