Iran executes four men over January protests and police station attack
Iranian state media reported on Sunday that four men were executed for their roles in armed unrest during January 2026 protests and an attack on a police station.
Executions follow court rulings
Three men named Hassan Dioband, Hamid Kazemi and Reza Zanganeh were executed after the Supreme Court upheld their death sentences. They faced charges for carrying out operations for Israel and the US while participating in January unrest. The judiciary stated they used firearms, grenades and Molotov cocktails to damage public facilities in Karaj. Their assets were confiscated following these verdicts.
Fourth man convicted separately
Mohammad Aref Shahbakhsh was executed on Saturday for involvement in an armed attack on the Qaleh Bid police station. Semi-official media identified him as a member of Jaish al-Adl militant group in Sistan-Balochestan province. He was convicted of armed rebellion and waging war against God during the incident. Reports did not specify the exact date or number of officers killed or wounded.
Other defendants receive prison terms
Ten other individuals accused of participating in the unrest under Dioband's supervision received prison sentences ranging from five to ten years. Following inquiries that named Dioband a suspect regarding assaults on public property and calls for violence, these arrests occurred. He was arrested on January 11 after authorities linked him to the destruction of an electricity substation.
