Rescuers searched for 140 people from the Virgo Transport 8 after it lost contact early Sunday while traveling between Surabaya and Banjarmasin in bad weather.

Evacuation efforts continue amid rough seas

Search and rescue officials confirmed that 103 passengers were evacuated using various ships before the search began. One person died among those rescued, according to a statement from the agency head. Rescuers battled waves reaching up to 2.5 metres while deploying teams, vessels, and a helicopter toward the last known position.

Search scope covers large area

The vessel carried either 241 or 243 people according to different reports from authorities. Officials have not yet explained what happened to the ship or why communication was lost. Some rescued individuals are being taken to a port in East Java.
