Indonesia receives former Italian warship as first aircraft carrier
Indonesia welcomed its first aircraft carrier, a retired Italian vessel named KRI Gajah Mada, at a naval base in North Jakarta on Friday.
Arrival and naming ceremony
The ship arrived at Tanjung Priok port where officials held a military ceremony to mark the event. It is a 41-year-old former Italian warship that Italy agreed to transfer in March after retiring it in 2024.
Planned operational role
The navy chief stated the vessel will primarily support military operations other than war but can handle combat missions if needed. The carrier has capacity for short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft as well as helicopters.
Commissioning schedule
Officials plan to formally commission the ship into the Indonesian Navy next week. This transfer makes Indonesia only the second country in south-east Asia to operate an aircraft carrier.
