Interception of Drone Attack

The Saudi Royal Air Defence Forces intercepted a drone launched by Yemen's Houthis before it could enter prohibited airspace over Mecca. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki stated that this was the second attempt to target the holy city after a ballistic missile launch in July 2017. Authorities issued emergency alerts for several cities including Yanbu and Jeddah but lifted them shortly after confirming the threat was neutralized.

Regional Diplomatic Response

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo to discuss free navigation in the Red Sea. Both leaders vowed a firm response to attacks by the Iran-backed group while emphasizing the need for secure shipping routes. Qatar warned against closing the Bab al-Mandab Strait which could lead to catastrophic consequences for global energy markets.

Impact on Oil Markets

Oil prices rose sharply after reports indicated that loadings at Saudi Arabia's Red Sea port of Yanbu had been suspended. The price of Brent crude increased nearly 3 percent to reach $108 a barrel following these developments in the region. Shipping industry sources cited the suspension as a sign of ongoing instability affecting the transit of oil and gas.
