Scope of the regulatory probe

The investigation examines whether the platform has failed to protect consumers from non-existent properties and impersonation fraud. Officials are also reviewing if Booking.com properly identified systemic risks related to these issues over the last four years. A third area of focus involves paid-for boosted listings that may not be clearly marked as advertisements.

Potential financial penalties for violations

Under the Digital Services Act, a company found in breach could face fines reaching 6% of its worldwide annual turnover. The commission stated that opening this investigation does not prejudge the final outcome of the case.
