Egypt court jails Mada Masr editor and orders outlet closed
Egyptian journalist Lina Attalah was convicted and detained on Tuesday after a Cairo court ordered the closure of her news outlet Mada Masr.

Judge imposes maximum penalty
The New Cairo Misdemeanour Court sentenced Attalah to a fine of 3m Egyptian pounds. Security personnel carried her out of the courtroom while she remained in custody. The ruling also included confiscation of property and shutting down the website.
Context of legal pressure
This verdict marks the most severe result in six years of cases against the publication. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has overseen a crackdown on dissent since 2013. Other journalists face similar charges related to their political affiliations.
