ASEAN climate monitor issues highest alert for Southern region haze
The ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre activated Alert Level 3 for the Southern ASEAN region on Saturday due to ongoing fires in Indonesia.

Alert criteria and regional impact
The centre triggered this highest-level warning because of high risks of severe transboundary haze. Conditions met the requirements with widespread moderate to dense smoke observed over two or more consecutive days. Dry weather and winds blowing haze toward neighbours sustained the situation across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and East Timor.
Health effects and daily disruptions
Schools have closed and respiratory complaints have spiked in large parts of Southeast Asia. Outdoor activities are restricted as pollution levels remain very hazardous. Residents report that the months-long spell has significantly disrupted daily life throughout the affected area.
Previous warnings this year
The ASMC website shows it has already issued two Level 3 alerts earlier in the year. This current activation follows a pattern of persistent hotspot activities and significant smoke coverage.
