Amnesty International urges US to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Amnesty International released a report on Thursday calling for the abolition of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement after documenting human rights violations.
Report documents widespread violations
The document titled We Had Whistles, They Had Guns details rights abuses during large-scale operations. Amnesty International stated that the US government is implementing a system fueled by racist rhetoric. The research gathered more than 150 testimonies between March and June in four major cities.
Recent incidents fuel anger
The release follows an event less than a week after a Venezuelan migrant was shot in Austin, Texas. Earlier this year, the deaths of two Americans in Minneapolis also sparked outrage across the country. Nadia Daar warned that masked agents attacking people puts everyone in danger.
Call for system overhaul
The director wrote that ICE is fundamentally broken and cannot be fixed by repairs. Amnesty said the agency needs to be abolished so the government can start over. The watchdog insists an immigration enforcement system must comply with international human rights law.
