US sanctions force Iranian airlines to cancel international flights
United States sanctions tightened on Wednesday forced Iranian carriers to suspend several international routes.
Flights suspended to Middle East
A travel agent in Tehran confirmed that services to Baghdad, Muscat, Qatar, Georgia and Azerbaijan were halted. The agent stated they stopped selling tickets due to the unstable situation and fear of further cancellations.
China opposes new measures
Beijing said Tuesday that it opposed the sanctions and called them illegal. A Mahan Air flight from Tehran still landed in Guangzhou despite the new restrictions taking effect Wednesday.
Other routes remain open
Flights to several other destinations including China remained available according to local reports. Some flights to Istanbul were scheduled while others had been canceled by Wednesday.
