US adds sites to UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List for future consideration
The United States has submitted new cultural and natural properties to the UNESCO Tentative List as a preliminary step toward potential World Heritage status.

Purpose of the tentative list
Inclusion on this list indicates that a country considers a property to have the potential for recognition. It serves as the first formal step before a site can be nominated for inscription. A site must demonstrate Outstanding Universal Value to qualify for World Heritage status.
Current US heritage sites
The United States currently holds 27 recognized UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from natural landscapes to manmade wonders. Examples include the Statue of Liberty and the San Antonio Missions in Texas. Other recognized locations feature the Florida Everglades and the Grand Canyon.
Properties on the tentative list are examined further to assess their international significance. Subsequent formal nominations are drawn up after a site is placed on this preliminary roster. This process establishes a stronger foundation for future examination by UNESCO.
