Trail runners gather in Chilean Patagonia for winter event
About 3,000 trail runners from nearly 30 countries attended the UTMB Torrencial race in Valdivia, Chile, this year.
Early morning run conditions
Participants ran at 3 a.m. in zero degree temperatures while drizzling rain fell. The group included 80 runners who stood together in the Punucapa rainforest before starting their course.
Event growth and attendance
The UTMB Torrencial began ten years ago with only 300 local participants. This year the event welcomed visitors from almost 30 countries to become the largest trail running competition in Latin America.
Cultural welcome on site
An Indigenous Mapuche singer performed an ancestral welcome chant for the athletes on his people's land. Organizers Marcela Escalona described the winter weather as a good place to learn to love the rain.
