Qantas airport workers start 24-hour strike at four Australian airports
Australia's Transport Worker's Union says Qantas ground staff began a 24-hour strike Thursday at Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth airports.
Strike targets pay and safety
Employees from Qantas Ground Services, Australian air Express freight operations and QantasLink are participating in the industrial action. The union demands higher wages matching industry standards along with more full-time positions and better safety conditions.
Safety screeners join the walkout
Up to 400 safety screeners in Sydney will conduct two sets of two-hour stoppages during this action. They also plan a separate three-hour stoppage scheduled for September 28.
Union criticises company structure
Michael Kaine stated that strike action is a last resort after workers faced injuries while performing critical duties. The union argues the airline requires a fundamental reset following years of cost-cutting measures and illegal outsourcing of over 1,800 roles.
