New Orleans revives the deadly Obituary Cocktail with gin and absinthe
Bartenders in New Orleans have revived the Obituary Cocktail, a drink combining gin, vermouth, and absinthe that was absent from menus for eight years.
History of the forgotten drink
The cocktail combines a martini base with one of the world's most notorious spirits. It started with gin and vermouth before adding absinthe delivered by atomiser or spoon. A lemon twist finishes the mixture with a burst of essential oils.
Legal status and availability
The drink did not appear on menus for eight years while absinthe remained illegal in the United States. Absinthe became legal again in 2007, allowing savvy local bartenders to make it on request. The first reported serving occurred sometime after that year at a bar called Cure.
Visual presentation and setting
The beverage is poured into a vintage Nick and Nora coupe glass for service. Uplighting shines through the liquor bottles to turn them into bejewelled reliquaries inside the venue. Visuals remain important in a city where costume is treated as a verb.
