Motorcyclist travels to remote Ishkoman Valley in Pakistan

A traveller rode a motorcycle from Islamabad to the remote Ishkoman Valley in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Journey details and route options

The rider covered a distance of 650km overland to reach the destination. Travellers can also fly into Gilgit before taking a taxi, though flights are unreliable. Alternatively, an overland bus journey may take more than 20 hours.

Valley location and features

Ishkoman borders Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor and remains one of the least-visited mountain regions in Pakistan. The area features snow-capped peaks, pale glacial streams, and pink cherry blossom trees along narrow switchbacks.

Local activities and guides

Visitors stay at a hostel where they can laze with sheep or visit shamans. A flock of white sheep guided the rider up a scree-covered slope to an overlook. The region offers opportunities for trekking high peaks and conferring with female shamans.
