Hikers sleep in Andy Goldsworthy sculptures during Haute-Provence trail
A group of hikers will sleep inside land art sculptures created by Andy Goldsworthy on a ten-day route in the Haute-Provence region.
Restored shelters host overnight stays
Local teams worked with the artist to restore abandoned shepherd huts and farmhouses for the project. Seven free off-grid sleeping cabins are available along the fifteen-kilometre hiking route. Visitors can reserve these spots to stay overnight while viewing the site-specific artworks.
Participants carry heavy backpacks
The trail requires hikers to gradually increase their load until they comfortably carry nine kilograms. One participant noted that sleeping in a sculpture was a wonderful idea for the experience. The group meets in Digne-les-Bains before beginning the multi-day journey through the mountainous countryside.
Route spans multiple refuges
Over four days, the hikers visit three of the restored refuges along the path. The route covers approximately forty-five kilometres and passes through a UNESCO geopark. Each shelter features unique artwork designed specifically for that location by Goldsworthy.
