Emily St. John Mandel wrote new novel while waiting for shelved TV adaptation
Brooklyn author Emily St. John Mandel spent time in Los Angeles in spring 2022 working on a stalled television adaptation of The Glass Hotel.
Author stayed in LA despite project delays
Mandel arrived in the city to develop a pilot script with showrunner Patrick Somerville. She had booked an Airbnb and arranged childcare for her daughter before the production setbacks occurred. The series did not move forward because deals were not closed in time at HBO.
Writer considered political climate and past characters
During this period she focused on two main ideas including the current political environment and a specific character named Ari. Mandel noted that Ari was the villain in her second novel The Singer's Gun and remained in prison at that time. She felt enough time had passed to finally create a narrative way to get the character out.
Mandel began drafting her next book
While thinking about the pilot, she started hammering out details for what would become her new novel. The author has previously reused characters across different books in her career. She is known for this repeated use of characters throughout her various literary works.
