US Navy selects Radiant microreactor for Indiana base power
The US Navy has chosen a portable nuclear microreactor from Radiant Industries to power critical systems at Naval Weapons Station Crane in Indiana by September 2028.
Prototype plant location and timeline
The selected unit will serve as a prototype plant for the weapons station in southern Indiana. Assistant Secretary Brendan Rogers stated that this dedicated power source ensures critical naval support systems remain operational during grid outages. The facility is scheduled to begin operation by September 2028.
Reactor specifications and capabilities
Radiant Industries will design, build, and deliver the Kaleidos microreactor which produces one megawatt of power. This truck-mounted reactor is intended to back critical loads rather than powering the entire base. The company has not yet publicly announced that the unit has gone critical.
Vendor response to selection
Radiant President Tori Shivanandan noted that no other organization possesses more experience in nuclear power than the Navy. The startup now claims it is the only firm selected by the Army, Navy, and Air Force for such projects.
