US courts order OpenAI to release deleted ChatGPT user logs
A US court ordered OpenAI in May 2025 to hand over more than 20 million deleted ChatGPT logs for the New York Times copyright case.

Deleted chats become legal evidence
A Washington Post investigation found that at least a dozen court cases have cited AI chatbot logs as evidence. These records include conversations users previously deleted and thought were confidential. Judges have ruled that no attorney-client privilege exists between a user and an artificial intelligence platform.
Privacy expectations clash with law
Eamonn Maguire from Proton stated that most people treat AI like a private diary. Legally, however, these records are held by a company without special protections. Users may be embarrassed to share certain questions but those chats could end up in court.
