Ukraine combines ancient balloon tech with modern drone for long strikes

Ukrainian engineers have paired a centuries-old aerostat system with a strike drone to extend flight range over 1,000km.

System design and altitude

The Balun aerostat lifts the Mara drone to an altitude of roughly 10km before release. Once free from the carrier balloon, the aircraft enters a guided flight phase that adds distance to its journey.

Independent flight capability

After separation, the fixed-wing aircraft glides independently for approximately 60km before reaching its target location. This method allows the total operational distance of the combined system to reach at least 1,060km.

Cost and mission use

Ukrainian officials state the entire setup costs up to $6,000 according to manufacturer estimates. The aerostat platform now supports both interception missions and direct strike operations against distant targets.
