Previous map name changes

Trump stated that Google previously updated its maps to show the Gulf of America and Lake America following his executive orders. He noted that the company had also renamed Lake Ontario after a trade dispute with Canada. The president said these earlier actions made Google Maps great partners for his naming proposals.

The Atlantic Ocean proposal

During the Wednesday night event, Trump said he called Pichai to ask if the company could handle renaming the Atlantic Ocean. He quoted the CEO as explaining that oceans cover many countries and are different from lakes or gulfs. Trump added that after hearing this response, he decided probably to pass on the idea.

Other map applications

Apple has joined Google in complying with Trump's name change requests for its maps application. Some other services like MapQuest have refused to follow their lead on these changes. The Guardian reported that Google has not publicly confirmed the details of this specific conversation.
