A Swedish test range saw an AI-equipped BAE Systems ALMA drone select and strike a vehicle in January 2026.
Autonomous Target Selection Process
The drone flew over snow-covered terrain and identified several objects within its field of view. Scaleout's onboard AI ranked an armored engineering vehicle as the most valuable target before striking it. No human intervened during the selection, ranking, or neutralization phases of this specific test.
Human Oversight During Test
A pilot remained on standby with a continuous connection throughout the entire exercise. Although humans set the mission and started the system, they did not use their controls for the attack. The demonstration highlighted how small AI models can perform end-to-end missions without human intervention.
Program Partnership Details
The flight was part of BAE Systems Bofors' Affordable Loointing Modular Ammunition program. Scaleout Systems supplied the onboard AI used for this demonstration. Industry and government stakeholders are now discussing AI safety as a key topic.
