Smart TV buyers should check for built-in cameras before purchase

Consumers are advised to inspect their smart televisions for hidden lenses and review manufacturer specifications to determine if a camera is present.

Checking for a built-in lens

Most modern smart TVs do not include cameras, but some older models from specific brands still feature them. Buyers can find the model number on the device label or in the system info menu to access official documentation. The specifications should explicitly mention a camera if one is included in the hardware.

Inspecting the physical frame

Users should look closely at the top edge of the screen for a tiny lens or breaks in the frame. Some cameras retract into the bezel, which can be identified by rectangular gaps in the design. Detachable accessories mounted above the screen may also indicate the presence of a camera on used units.

Distinguishing external from internal

References to video calling features do not prove an internal camera exists because external devices can be connected separately. A lack of documentation mentioning a camera suggests the device relies on outside peripherals for video communication. Checking for connected accessories is necessary when purchasing a second-hand television set.
