Six independent advisers quit Meta-led anti-terrorism group board
Six members of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism advisory board resigned on Monday after tensions with Meta.
Resignation follows internal dispute
A letter seen by WIRED confirms that six of the nine independent experts left the group. Interviews with three former members indicate the departures stem from disagreements over the committee's role. The departing experts had advised the consortium on preventing platforms from becoming havens for radical organizations.
Meta changes selection process
An email from Meta vice president Nell McCarthy in July proposed a new plan for the board. Under this proposal, future committee members would be chosen by tech companies rather than elected by current peers. The letter stated that the consortium no longer desired independent scrutiny on the effectiveness of Big Tech efforts.
Committee powers restricted
The proposed changes would bar the advisory committee from weighing in on key topics regarding consortium performance. Meta currently serves as chair of the operating board, giving it outsized influence over policy decisions. Other companies on the panel must ultimately approve any major changes to the group's structure.
