Sigil Wen launches private AI assistant Underdog in Silicon Valley
Self-taught coder Sigil Wen launched an invite-only beta of his on-device AI assistant Underdog in Silicon Valley on Monday.
Developer background and early work
Wen moved to the region at age seventeen and lived in an AI hacker house with researcher Andrej Karpathy. He worked alongside future industry leaders including Perplexity founder Aravind Srinivas and OpenAI researcher Noam Brown during that period.
New tool features and availability
The new assistant runs wholly on-device to keep user data on Macs and Windows PCs. Versions for Linux, iPhone, and Android are scheduled to arrive in the near future.
Custom inference engine details
Wen built a software component called Husky to power the model and ensure it runs fast. This engine is designed to move less data between components compared to other on-device solutions.
