New obligations for tech firms

The companies must now preserve customer details and logs showing how communications move through their systems. Russian law mandates that these records stay within the country for a period of three years. Authorities can request voice recordings, video exchanges, and text messages associated with people using these services.

Consequences for noncompliance

Bloomberg reported that firms ignoring these rules face financial penalties from the communications regulator. Persistent violations could eventually lead to service bans within Russia. Apple and Microsoft join other providers like Google Meet and WhatsApp on this official list.
