New software deal details

The company revealed this expansion during its third-quarter investor presentation released on Thursday. Rivian did not disclose specific licensing fees or payment terms for the technology transfer. The AI assistant recently launched in Rivian vehicles and could appear in Volkswagen's upcoming ID EVERY1 hatchback.

Joint venture financial growth

Volkswagen increased its investment commitment to up to $5.8 billion by 2027, raising the original valuation of $5 billion. This initial tie-up was formalized through an independent company that began operations in November 2024. The partnership originally focused on bringing Rivian's electrical architecture and software to Volkswagen's next generation of vehicles.

Platform extensibility proof

Rivian described the inclusion of AI elements as a proof point for the extensibility of its in-house platform. The automaker spent two years developing the AI assistant before showing it off last year. Development work on the technology continues alongside this new licensing agreement.
