Razer and Framework bring new eGPU options to laptops
Razer and Framework announced new external graphics processor kits for compatible laptops in July 2025.
Thunderbolt bandwidth limits performance
An external GPU connects to a laptop through Thunderbolt or USB4 cables. This connection carries less data than a slot inside a desktop computer. Textures and shaders load into memory once but the cable handles new assets only.
Some devices cannot use eGPUs
Apple Silicon-based Macs are unable to run these external graphics cards for gaming. The enclosure housing the card costs hundreds of dollars in addition to the hardware. A Thunderbolt 4 port allocates only a fraction of the bandwidth found in desktop slots.
New hardware arrives this year
Razer revived its product line with a Thunderbolt 5 dock in July 2025. Framework is building a specific kit for its Laptop 16 model. These options offer more power without requiring a full replacement of the main machine.
