Launch pricing versus current costs

The standard disc version launched at an MSRP of $499 when the console arrived in 2020. The Digital Edition debuted at a lower price of $399 at that same time. These initial prices followed trends seen with previous generations of Sony hardware.

Digital edition price jump

Six years later, the PS5 Digital Edition retails for $599 in 2026. This represents a $200 increase since the original launch six years ago. Such a hike contradicts typical pricing trends seen at the end of a console generation.

Disc edition price change

The Disc Edition has seen a relatively smaller jump in its retail price over the same period. Reports indicate the cost has risen but not to the extent of the digital model. Minor hardware revisions have occurred without fully justifying the overall price hike.
