PlayStation 5 plays existing discs and most PS4 games
Sony confirms that current PlayStation 5 consoles can play physical game discs from previous generations while new releases after 2028 will not include physical copies.

Current console disc support
Owners of the standard PlayStation 5 model can use Blu-ray movies and DVDs alongside their game library. The console supports all existing PS5 game discs as well as the overwhelming majority of physical PS4 titles. Digital-only versions of the console require an optional detachable drive to read these physical media formats.
Future physical media plans
Sony has stated that no new games released in 2028 or later will receive physical copies. This shift affects future releases but does not change the compatibility of current discs already in circulation. Traditionalists can continue using their stack of older games and movies on the current hardware.
