Pakistan allows smartphone users to pay taxes in monthly installments
Smartphone owners in Pakistan can now pay device taxes in monthly installments starting after a new plan was announced by lawmakers.
New payment plan details
Users who previously faced bills between 100,000 and 250,000 rupees will now pay approximately 8,000 to 17,000 rupees per month. Lawmaker Gilani stated that this change makes the tax burden more manageable for consumers. The arrangement replaces a large one-time payment with smaller monthly charges.
Lawmakers push for relief
The issue gained momentum in June when lawmakers argued mobile devices are essential tools rather than luxury items. On June 11, Gilani called for a review of the tax structure in the National Assembly. Federal Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja joined the effort by displaying placards that labeled phones as necessities.
Focus on affordability
Gilani noted that high charges make mobile phones less affordable for students and low-income users. He linked the taxation issue to the digital divide as mobile phones become increasingly important. The lawmaker said he would continue pushing for further reductions and concessions for the public.
