OpenAI plans to build a humanoid robot with a brain focus

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the company is developing a humanoid robot while prioritizing artificial intelligence software over physical design details.

Reason for human form choice

Altman explained that the world is designed around people, making a similar body shape logical for the machine. He noted that doors and tools are built for a specific type of body, so matching that form factor seems good.

Timeline for public demo

The CEO told Fortune that a cool demonstration is expected in 2027. He stated that robots walking the streets will not happen for a few more years.

Priority on software development

Altman said figuring out the brain that makes the robot work is more important than nitty-gritty details about its appearance. Giving a machine two arms and legs does not get it very far without knowing what to do with them.
