Nvidia agrees to study retired German nuclear sites for AI data centers

Nvidia and a German utility have signed an agreement to examine decommissioned nuclear reactor locations in Germany for potential use as artificial intelligence computing hubs.

Preliminary agreement signed with utility

The US chipmaker Nvidia has reached a preliminary deal with PreussenElektra GmbH to investigate specific retired facilities. This partnership focuses on repurposing existing infrastructure rather than restarting any nuclear reactors. The companies will look at grid connections and water access at these shuttered sites.

Germany closes all reactors in 2023

Following the Fukushima incident, Germany permanently shut down its final operating reactors in April 2023. About thirty atomic stations across the nation are currently undergoing dismantling processes. PreussenElektra manages the closure and teardown of eight of these specific stations.

Specific locations remain unconfirmed

Neither company has officially named the sites under review for this new project. The eight locations managed by PreussenElektra are assumed to be the ones receiving scrutiny. No details have been released regarding which specific plants Nvidia and the utility will inspect.
