New deep-sea drones will explore most of the world’s oceans by 2028
French agency Ifremer plans to add thirty new autonomous floats to the global Argo fleet to reach depths of six thousand meters before 2028.
Current data collection limits
The existing international network relies on four thousand devices that typically operate between two thousand and four thousand meters. Ten percent of ocean warming happens below this range, creating a significant gap in current monitoring efforts.
New prototype testing results
Ifremer completed five successful dives using its Deep-6000 prototypes during the first two months of this year. These missions collected vital information about the abyssal zone and proved the technology works at extreme depths.
Future fleet expansion goals
France joins China and the United States as a third nation developing floats for these deep zones. By 2028, thirty additional units will join the current fleet to cover over ninety-eight percent of ocean volume.
