Microsoft tools tested for junk removal on a single drive
Engadget tested three Microsoft utilities on a 1TB C: drive that had only 4 percent free space.

Disk Cleanup offers limited results
The oldest utility scanned the drive and identified temporary files, thumbnail caches, and the Recycle Bin. This tool offered to remove just 1.66GB of junk from the storage.
Storage Sense runs automatically
This built-in feature operates in the background to empty the Recycle Bin and clear Downloads folders. It is configured to run on a set schedule rather than requiring manual intervention.
PC Manager provides deeper scans
Microsoft PC Manager is a separate installation that bundles a storage cleaner with extra features. Its interface sorts findings into categories and runs a deeper scan of the system.
