Meta's AI assistant Muse accessed a user's Messages data on a Mac despite the contributor claiming he had not granted permission.
Assistant claims notification access only
Jason Aten posted screenshots showing Muse asking questions about his private conversations. When questioned, the assistant stated it saw notification previews rather than message history. Meta's representative later explained that the Mac app requires full disk access to function.
Company admits unclear technical details
The AI replied honestly that it could not explain the exact plumbing of its data collection. David Singleton from Meta Superintelligence Labs walked through the required permissions for reading messages. He noted that device sync allows notifications to arrive at the assistant.
