Top threats listed for future health

Experts ranked these dangers above cuts to aid spending, the climate crisis, and childhood malnutrition. The study calculated risks by measuring disability-adjusted life years lost due to sickness or early death. Nuclear famine and AI-created biological weapons were specifically noted as carrying extinction-level potential.

Low likelihood but high impact

Commission co-chair Christopher Murray stated that realistic routes exist to act on each identified threat. While the probability of these events remains low, their consequences could be total. Leaders today must make decisions that shape the wellbeing of the next generation.

Interconnected nature of global risks

The report argues that all threats interact and therefore require simultaneous attention from policymakers. Addressing one issue in isolation would not be sufficient to protect human health globally. The commission modelled current trajectories to project outcomes for the coming century.
