Kairos Power secures $100 million from Samsung group for Google nuclear project
Kairos Power announced a partnership with Samsung C&T to build a demonstration reactor for Google in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Engineering firm joins startup
Samsung C&T will provide engineering services and an equity investment worth up to $100 million. The equity portion of the deal is valued at $70 million according to a company spokesperson. Samsung C&T has experience building or helping build about a dozen nuclear reactors globally.
Reactor construction timeline
Kairos aims to complete the 50 megawatt demonstration reactor by 2030. The startup received approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in November 2024 to build the reactors. Currently, the company is constructing two reactors in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Power demand driver
This project comes as nuclear startups benefit from increased power demand from AI data centers. Google signed its initial deal with Kairos in fall 2024 for future capacity. Output from the Hermes reactors will count toward the first 50 megawatts of that agreement.
