Joby Aviation completes first autonomous US flight between California and North Carolina
Joby Aviation finished a fully autonomous flight across the United States connecting California to North Carolina.
The aircraft flew without pilot input
The startup outfitted a converted Cessna Caravan with its own autonomous flight system. This plane handled taxiing, takeoff, cruising, and landing without any control inputs from an onboard safety pilot. A human monitor remained on the aircraft while remote supervisors watched from headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
The route covered 3199 miles
The journey began at Buchanan Field Airport and ended at Dare County Regional Airport in Outer Banks. Joby stated this trip marked the first-ever autonomous flight across the United States. After finishing the eastbound leg, the aircraft will travel westward to make pit stops in Raleigh, Salt Lake City, and Portland.
