Ad campaign targets global users

Trend Micro's AI cybersecurity unit analyzed digital advertising data to identify the surveillance activity. The research concluded that Discover-Tech was the primary bidder on Starlink advertising traffic. These malicious adverts did not require user clicks to begin collecting data from browsers and applications.

Campaign spans restricted regions

The alleged spy campaign reached Starlink terminals in areas where the service faces restrictions. TrendAI initially referred to the entity as Shadow-Earth-79 before directly naming Discover-Tech. This firm was previously linked to targeting Al Jazeera journalists with similar malicious adverts.
